This concerto was composed in late 2020 and early 2021. It is partly based on ideas that did not quite fit -- mostly for being too dark and edgy -- into the preceding work, the wind serenade.

Structurally the work is modelled upon the Grieg piano concerto: the movements are in the same keys, and both works begin with a loud solo statement whose cadential-versus-thematic nature is not immediately clear.
