The style in which I had been working productively for about a decade became academic. These pieces are experiments towards aspects of new manners. As such, they parallel Schoenberg's Op. 19 pieces, which (as one thinks) were written to a similar purpose. Each of those pieces fit exactly on a page; some of these are a bit longer, some a bit shorter, but they take up six pages (and seven minutes) overall. They are studies in (in descending order of importance) texture, rhythm, and harmony. They mostly evade the question of time; that is what will have to be taken up next, in "larger" works (which, in this style-category, probably means around ten minutes.) For all these reasons, I do not give them an opus number.
